The first of a trilogy of ‘dance’ films (followed by The Bamboo Flute and the as-yet unreleased Priye Charushile), Bhavantarana expands on some of the modes Shahani had first explored in Khayal Gatha. The dance form is the famous Odissi, a form in Orissa that emerged from an earlier folk mode typically performed by young boys. The dancer is one of India’s leading figures, Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra. The film begins with a traditional sculptor hewing a dancer’s image from a piece of stone that he holds down with his feet, expanding from there to links from dance to sculpture, and from folk to classical forms. While several dances come from Mahapatra’s traditional repertory, the finale – the spectacular Navarasa – is choreographed specially for the film.

The action takes place during the socialist period in Bulgaria. The central character, nicknamed the Cock is an artistic personality, a man of strong character known as the king of the pickpockets. His keen sense of personal freedom comes up against the universally accepted norms of behavior. The Cock likes a game, adventure and danger, while socialist society needs obedience. The Cock makes a stand against this order; he does not want to play his games according to rules. He is telling his story of two decades: his imprisonment, his love affairs. To him love is a fateful meeting of two persons and has nothing to do with Philistinism. The Cock is an amiable chap though being an adventurer, trickster, and an artist by nature, irresponsible and asocial. In the mean time he wastes his gift on virtuoso thefts and monumental banquets which regularly land him in jail. In the jail the imperfect correctional methods and the chaos reigning in his own soul induce him to betray his fellow inmates. In the end the filmmakers allow him to die a dignified death. During an escape attempt before dying he saves the life of a child. His dream of life comes to an absurd end.

Melodrama lesbo love pulp fiction classic. Shot in 1975 (expect a few visible scratches and sound glitches), the film focuses on California housewives Denise and Adria, whose husbands are always away on business leaving the gals to spend their days together shopping, horseback riding and going out for lunch. At one such lunch on Sunset Blvd. the women spot two lesbians holding hands, which gives the butchy Denise (you know she's butch because she wears tweed suits) shivers that she just can't explain. Of course, it's not long before Denise and the high-femme Adria fall into bed together. But is it true lesbo love? Can Denise tame Adria and her love for hunky out-of-work actors? And most of all, can they both survive living amid orange shag rugs, avocado furniture and macram wall hangings?
